UWC to Monitor Ukraine's Parliamentary Elections

In response to the Foreign Minister of Ukraine’s January 25th pledge to invite International Election Observers to monitor the upcoming October 28th parliamentary elections, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has announced that it will once again actively participate in Ukraine’s electoral process by hosting a delegation of International Election Observers.

Long and short-term monitoring and reporting on the electoral process is critical to protect Ukraine’s fledgling democracy. As a result, at the last UWC Board meeting, a motion was approved to establish a special committee to lead and coordinate an international election observation mission.

Ukrainian World Congress Calls for the Immediate Release of Yulia Tymoshenko

Earlier today, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was arrested in court and subsequently transported to Lukyanivska prison for detention.  Ms. Tymoshenko is defending herself against allegations which have been widely perceived as politically motivated by the international community.

UWC Calls for More Effective European Outreach to the People of Ukraine

In a letter to high-ranking European officials dated June 24, 2011, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) reaffirmed its support for the further integration of Ukraine into the European Union and its governing institutions.
 
The UWC has consistently encouraged European leaders to reach out to Ukraine on a grassroots level in order for Europe’s ideals to capture the hearts and minds of the people of Ukraine.

UWC Condemns Russia's Attempt to Impede Ukraine's EU Integration

On May 27, 2011, in a letter addressed to high-ranking European officials, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has condemned Russia’s clear attempt to impede the integration of Ukraine with the European Union (EU).
 
In its letter, the UWC pointed to recent mass media reports that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that Ukraine must choose whether it wants close ties with Russia, or whether it wants to become a member of the EU.

UWC expresses deep concern about the decision by the Cassation Panel of Russia's Supreme Court regarding the FNCAUR

On January 27, 2011 the Cassation Panel of Russia’s Supreme Court rejected the appeal of the Federal National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia. This was the third such decision by a judicial body in Russia (following the Tver Regional Court in Moscow and the Supreme Court of Russia) which supported the allegations made by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation regarding the Federal National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia.

UWC Memorandum: Library of Ukrainian Literature in Moscow
It is the position of the Ukrainian World Congress that the recent searches, seizure of materials and arbitrary closure of the Library, as well as the physical abuse of the Library director by the Russian authorities not only ignore the Russian law “On Countering Extremist Activities” but also conflict with the obligations of the RF under the aforementioned UN Declaration and two international covenants.

Therefore, the Ukrainian World Congress is calling upon the international community to take notice of this unacceptable conduct of the Russian authorities regarding the only Ukrainian library in the RF and and to take prompt and decisive action to protect the human and national minority rights of the Ukrainian minority in the RF.

UWC Memorandum: Federal National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia

the Ukrainian World Congress is calling upon the international community to take notice of this unacceptable conduct of the Russian authorities towards two Ukrainian NGOs in the RF and to take prompt and decisive action to protect the human and national minority rights of the Ukrainian minority in the RF.

Most urgently, the Ukrainian World Congress is requesting that the international community send observers to the January 27, 2011 hearing regarding the FNCAUR before the Cassation Panel of the RF Supreme Court, the final court of appeal available in the RF. This hearing will begin at 11:20 a.m. on January 27, 2011 at the RF Supreme Court situated at 15 Povarskaya Street, Entrance 5, Moscow, 121260, Russia.

UWC Memorandum: Union of Ukrainians in Russia

It is the position of the Ukrainian World Congress that the conduct of the Russian authorities is motivated by the desire to undermine the activities of the Ukrainian national minority in the RF. This conflicts with the obligations of the RF as a member of the UN and the OSCE and signatory of several international covenants.

Therefore, the Ukrainian World Congress is calling upon the international community to take notice of this unacceptable conduct of the Russian authorities towards two Ukrainian NGOs in the RF and to take prompt and decisive action to protect the human and national minority rights of the Ukrainian minority in the RF.

Call upon President Yanukovych to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide

The Ukrainian World Congress has launched an international postcard campaign addressed to President Yanukovych calling upon him to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and to ensure that the Law of Ukraine on the Holodomor of 1932-33 maintains it was a genocide.
